Frequently Asked Questions
There are many questions that
women and children have when they find themselves in a situation
of domestic violence and when turning to the Refuge for support.
We have listed questions
frequently asked about issues surrounding resettlement.
If you do not see the answer to
your concerns or queries on this page, please call a member of

Q1. I HAVE NO FURNITURE TO
MOVE INTO A NEW HOME WITH; WHAT CAN I DO?
Once you have been offered a tenancy our resettlement worker
can help you with all the practical help you may need. In many
cases we can help you apply for a Community Care Grant to
provide some money for you to buy the essentials you need to
start in a new home.
Q2.
HOW LONG CAN I GET HELP FROM THE RESETTLEMENT WORKER?
We can provide support for up to a six month period after
you have left Refuge.
Q3.
I AM WORRIED ABOUT SETTLING INTO A NEW AREA; I DON’T EVEN KNOW
WHICH SCHOOLS THERE ARE?
Try not to worry we will make sure we do everything we can
to help you find out what is available in the area you have
moved to, we have information resources you can use. We can help
you get a new school sorted, or a new GP. We can go with you to
appointments and help you explore the area. We also have up to
date information on all sorts of groups, events and activities
in your area and can go along with you if you want to join in.
Q4.
WHAT ABOUT HOUSING BENEFIT AND CLAIMING BENEFITS FROM MY
NEW HOME; HOW WILL I MANAGE?
We will help you claim any benefits you are entitled to and
get your money sorted as soon as possible. We can also help you
with a budgeting plan.
Q5.
I’M NOT SURE I’LL FEEL SAFE WHEN I MOVE IN A NEW HOUSE?
We can help support and advise you on aspects of home
security. You can get a warden linked alarm fitted in your home
at a small cost, and we can help check out if you are able to
get additional home security devices free of charge. If you want
to pursue any legal measures to keep you safe from your
ex-partner we can organise a appointment with a female solicitor
for you to find out what your options are.
Q6.
WILL I BE ABLE TO BE INVOLVED IN ANY SUPPORT GROUPS AFTER I HAVE
LEFT THE REFUGE?
Yes, we are always developing our group work sessions for
ex-residents and we have the use of our on-site learning centre
(the oyster room). You need to let the
resettlement worker know what you are interested in — it could
be anything from computer skills to crafts to women’s studies or
something we hadn’t thought of, as Karen a refuge resident said
“come to the Oyster Room it gets you out of your shell and you
may find pearls of wisdom!”
